"NOT ONLY THE MOON BUT THE STARS TOO"

Not only the moon but the stars too,
these hand-fasting rings.

The first a promise pulled from the sky
and tied to my hand like a balloon—

lovelorn ghost, luminous and round.
The second a circle

of workaday vows plucked
from a universe of needs

and fixed
for the ordinary orbit of years.

Lampert Finalist

Good news. Susan Briscoe's The Crow's Vow has been shortlisted for the $ 1,000 2011 Gerald Lampert Award for Best First Book of Poetry. Delighted to see Jeff Latosik's Tiny, Frantic, Stronger on the same list. Though a big bronx cheer to the jury for overlooking Michael Lista's Bloom. Winners are announced June 11.

Susan Briscoe Reading

Our very own Susan Briscoe will be reading this Sunday at 9pm at The Sparrow (5322 Boulevard St.Laurent), along with Antony Di Nardo, Jacob McArthur Mooney and Richard Van Camp.

Crowing

The Crow's Vow gets another good notice, this time across the pond.

The book's fans now include Bert Almon, who called it "brilliant" in the MRB, and Brian Campbell who, writing for Rover, praised the book's "keen observation, exquisite detail and masterful rendering of the passage of time."

The book is also picking up plaudits for its look. It was included in a recent round up of "40 stunning minimalist book covers."

Saturday, July 17, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Knowlton WordFest 2010, Pettes Memorial Library, 276 Knowlton Road. She reads with A.F. Moritz (The Sentinel).
